Checklist: What to engrave on a wooden gift?

Engraved wooden gifts: pen, ballpoint and wooden spoon with text

You've found the perfect wooden gift — and then comes the best question: what do you have engraved on it? An engraving is permanent, so you want to get it right first time. This checklist helps you decide quickly and without doubt.

The checklist

1. Start with the name

A first name is the safest and most powerful choice: short, personal and never out of fashion. Check the spelling twice — especially with names containing a y or i, double letters or accents.

2. Add a date if you like

A birth date, wedding date or anniversary year instantly turns the gift into a keepsake. Pick one date format and stick to it — "12.06.2026" looks sharper than a long written-out date.

3. Short is powerful

Want to add a message or quote? Keep it under ten words. "World's best grandma" or "Cheers, my friend!" works better than a full paragraph: the less text, the larger and more readable the engraving.

4. Choose a fitting font

Elegant script fonts suit a birth or wedding gift, clean block letters fit a sturdy beer crate or corporate gift. On every product page you immediately see a preview of the available fonts, so there are no surprises.

5. Think of the recipient, not yourself

The golden rule: engrave what the recipient will enjoy seeing every day. Torn between funny and classic? Choose classic — humour wears off, a name never does.
